Prophets & Apostles

It is a big concern among Latter-day Saints as to whether drinking cola drinks such as Coca-Cola or Pepsi is a form of breaking the word of wisdom or not.
As a young man growing up in Ghana, I frequently ask myself whether it was wrong to take such drinks because members were not cool with it. As a missionary in Nigeria, many church leaders frowned at you the moment they see you having such a drink.
It became a topic of discussion whenever there is a missionary discussion with investigators, members, and among missionaries. My mission president wrote to the area president most of the time to help members understand the word of wisdom better.
My humble question is, was a brand quoted in the revelation given to the prophet Joseph Smith? The answer is no. In section 89 of the Doctrine of Covenant, the Lord revealed for members to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and hot drinks. Prophets have also taught that we should not use substances that contain illegal drugs or harmful and addictive substances. The Word of Wisdom also teaches that we should eat meat sparingly and that we should eat grains, fruits, and vegetables. The Lord revealed the Word of Wisdom to him and we are warned to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and hot drinks, meaning coffee and tea. Now we know it was not mentioned, so it was not mentioned.
Bruce R. McConkie in his teaching stated: “Some unstable people become cranks…There is no prohibition in Section 89 as to the eating of white sugar, cocoa, chocolate…or anything else except items classified under tea, coffee, tobacco, and liquor. If some particular food disagrees with an individual, then that person should act accordingly without reference to the prohibitions in this particular law of health”.Spencer W. Kimball also said, “I never drink any of the cola drinks and my personal hope would be that no one would. However, they are not included in the Word of Wisdom in its technical application. I quote from a letter from the secretary to the First Presidency, ‘But the spirit of the Word of Wisdom would be violated by the drinking or eating of anything that contained a habit-forming drug.’ With reference to the cola drinks, the Church has never officially taken any attitude on this at but I personally do not put them in the class as with the tea and coffee because the Lord specifically mentioned them [the hot drinks]”.The Word of Wisdom is a law of health revealed by the Lord for the physical and spiritual benefit of His children to the prophet Joseph Smith Jnr. on February 27, 1833, as recorded in section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants
